The game was met with mixed reception from video game critics. They praised its visuals and writing, which included many parodies of other video games, while they criticized its short length and poor camera system, which did not always function properly. The Simpsons Game received the Best Game Based on a Movie or TV Show award at the 2007 Spike Video Game Awards and was nominated for Best Video Game Writing at the 2007 Writers Guild of America Awards. As of January 31, 2008, four million copies of the game have been sold worldwide.
Several challenges are made available after all episodes are completed. These include finding all the collectibles for each character,[1] finding all the video game clichés,[6] and in the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo DS versions, completing a certain task related to each episode's plot in a time trial.[7][8]
The DS version of the game was developed separately from its console counterparts and is a side scrolling adventure. It also offers several features that are not available in the other versions. Several minigames are available to unlock and play, most which are updated versions of arcade games such as Frogger and Space Invaders, the latter which references the aliens Kang and Kodos from the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episodes. A virtual pet is also accessible, called \"Pet Homer\", which allows players to feed, entertain, and save Homer from threats such as choking and heart attacks.[9]
The Simpsons Game was published by Electronic Arts and developed by its subsidiary, EA Redwood Shores; the company had signed a contract for the video game rights to The Simpsons in 2005.[14] The game's lead designer, Greg Rizzer, said that when he asked his bosses if they could parody some Electronic Arts games including Medal of Honor, they were enthusiastic about it.[15] The Simpsons Game, which parodies video games from 30 years prior to 2007, was forced to have some of its content removed after several video game companies complained about it. Rizzer, however, was still pleased with the amount of parody in the game and considered The Simpsons the \"perfect vehicle to poke fun at the games industry\".[16] At the 2007 Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany, a poster for \"Grand Theft Scratchy\", one of the levels in The Simpsons Game and a parody of Grand Theft Auto, was asked to be taken down by an employee of Rockstar Games, the company that develops the Grand Theft Auto series of video games. Several companies, however, embraced the game's parody of their video games, including developers from Harmonix, who were pleased with the game's \"Sitar Hero\", a parody of Harmonix's Guitar Hero video game.[16] In addition to game parodies, The Simpsons Game also features several cameos with satirical spins, including Matt Groening as himself and Will Wright as an antagonist.[1]
The game received mixed reception, receiving an aggregated score of 71% on Metacritic for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 version of the game.[35] Praise focused on the game's visuals and writing, which lampooned the gaming industry and the show itself. The Simpsons Game won the award for Best Game Based on a Movie or TV Show at the Spike Video Game Awards 2007,[36] and was nominated for the first-ever award for Best Video Game Writing at the Writers Guild of America Awards 2007.[37] As of January 31, 2008, four million copies of the game have been sold overall.[38] Its PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS releases each received a \"Platinum\" sales award from the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA),[39] indicating sales of at least 300,000 copies per version in the United Kingdom.[40] ELSPA presented the game's Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation Portable versions with \"Silver\" certifications,[41] for sales of 100,000 units or more each in the region.[40] Peter Nowak of CBC News named it the third-best game of 2007 and described it as \"easily the best game starring the wacky residents of Springfield\".[42]
The DS version of the game, which was significantly different from the other versions, received praise for its unique gameplay, but criticism for its short length. IGN lauded the DS version's unique gameplay experience[27] and GameSpot proclaimed that it was satisfying from start to finish.[22] GameSpot and GameZone, however, were both disappointed that the game was extremely brief.[19][22] 1UP found that even though The Simpsons Game parodied numerous 2D platform game conventions, it used them anyway, making it a pointless endeavor.[9]
The Simpsons Game is a video game which is available for the Wii, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable. Each version has an exclusive cover art. It is a third-person action game featuring an original storyline written by Tim Long, Matt Selman, and Matt Warburton. The plot is self-referential in nature, with the Simpson family discovering that they are forced to participate in another Simpsons video game. Homer's super-attack is burping. His main power is eating to turn into Homer Ball, a big ball to burst or slam enemies or walls. His other power, which he gets later in the game, is inhaling helium to turn into \"Heli-Homer\", a big gas ball to float into the air. Another of his powers is eating Gummi Venus de Milos to turn into \"Gummi-Homer\", a big gummi ball to shoot gummi balls to enemies. In the Xbox 360 and PS3 version, Homer's shield item is a hot-pepper to turn into \"Lava-Homer\", a big lava ball that can walk on hazardous terrain, like barbed wire and defeat enemies and destroy things by touching them, although he can't use any abilities other than the aforementioned ones.
The game has 16 levels. Some of them can be picked up randomly, while most of them have to be completed to get to the next one. There are several hubs in which these can be picked up: the Simpsons house, the backyard of the house, and the game engine. In the Xbox and PS3 version, all of Springfield can be explored and the levels are started from certain buildings, depending on the main location of the level.
After the aliens attack, Bart and Lisa go to see Professor Frink, but he has been transported to a different world and they decide to follow him. When they reach the world it is a giant videogame world full of versions of popular videogame characters such as versions of Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog. They find that Frink has been kidnapped by an ape (a parody of Donkey Kong), but Lisa uses her new Hand of Buddha powers to send the ape into the acid (As the Ape is sent into the acid, he gives a thumbs up, similar to the T-800 when being melted down in Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Frink gives them cheat codes, but decided to stay in the videogame world because he was marrying a Koopa (from the Mario franchise).
Several after-episode challenges exist. These include finding all the collectibles for each character, finding all the videogame cliches, completing the episode under a certain amount of time, not dying once, and in the PS3, 360 and DS versions, completing a certain task related to the episode's plot in a time trial. While the game for each system includes two episodes set in Springfield, a Springfield hub is also included that can be explored freely without any goals, and contains additional collectibles and cliches. These two versions also have extra mini-games, including parodies of Joust, Pokémon and Space Invaders. All versions have mini-game parodies based on Gauntlet, Missile Command, Frogger, and Dance Dance Revolution. Each family member has their own abilities, with the PS3 and 360 version having character-unique power-ups. Bart is similar to a traditional platform character, with slingshot, grapple and cape to glide, the ability to use ziplines and a power-up that turns him into a RoboCop-esque RoboBart, with invulnerability and lasers that can go through glass and destroy enemies and obstacles in one hit. Homer's abilities are similar to Katamari Damacy, as he turns into
